The Air Intake Heater (AIH) can be found in 99.5+ 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel trucks. It's located in the Cold Side Inlet of the intake manifold on the engine and blocks approximately 20% of the intake path. Since the heater is rarely used due to the very specific circumstances under which the PCM enables it, many customers have removed it in and replaced it with a plug like the one shown above.
Our AIH plug is a steel hydraulic unit with an integral o-ring for proper sealing. Only basic hand tools are required for installation, see below for installation instructions:
- Remove the BLACK ground wire from the center post of the heater. It is not necessary to remove the ground wire from the vehicle completely, but you may do so if you'd like.
- Remove the RED wire from the heater. Follow the red wire back to the solenoid that activates is and remove it from this end as well.
- Replace the nut removed to disconnect the red wire from the solenoid. Make sure you do NOT disconnect the blue wire, it must stay connected to the solenoid.
- Remove the AIH from the Intake Manifold
- Install the AIH Delete Plug. This plug has an integral o-ring for sealing, simply snug it into the manifold...don't overtighten it.
- Save the removed parts should you ever want to reinstall them.
While some customers have reported "Seat of the Pants" improvements in responsiveness by removing the heater, we don't feel that it's right to make any performance claims with this product. This mod is really intended to be part of a complete intake system upgrade, with an eye toward making every airflow improvement possible.
Note: Removal of the AIH does not negatively impact the operation of the engine.
